Fort Lauderdale, FL (June 19, 2021) – Around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, June 19, one man died and another man was critically injured after a crash occurred at the Stonewall Pride Parade in Fort Lauderdale.
Officers with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department say that a truck driver hit two pedestrians at the beginning of the festival, which is celebrated by Wilton Manors during Pride Month. This year, the event took place in Fort Lauderdale at 1700 Northeast Fourth Avenue and began just before 7:00 p.m.
Surveillance footage shows that the pickup truck was in the parade’s procession when the driver suddenly accelerated, crashing into the Fort Lauderdale Garden Center and hitting two members of a chorus at the parade. Officers say he attempted to flee but police detained him shortly after the incident occurred.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials reported that paramedics transported both victims to Broward Health Medical Center via ambulance in critical condition.
One of the victims later died at the hospital.
Police have not yet confirmed if the driver hit the two men intentionally, though FLPD Detective Ali Adamson said that the investigation is active. The FBI is also investigating,, and are questioning the driver at this time.
