Daytona Beach, FL (August 1, 2021) – On Friday, July 30, a hit-and-run dump truck crash occurred on a highway in Daytona Beach.

According to Daytona Beach Police, the accident happened on the Daytona International Speedway. A man identified as Thomas Somersall was operating a dump truck in the area when he suddenly struck several vehicles in the area due to unknown reasons. The vehicles involved in the accident were badly damaged.

Paramedics and numerous other local responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. Approximately 11 people were injured in the accident. Three of these victims were rushed to the hospital, though their conditions are not yet known.

Somersall got out of the dump truck and fled the scene on foot. However, police later caught up to him and he was charged with multiple counts of hit-and-run.

Eastbound lanes of traffic were blocked in the area for some time, which led to major delays until the scene was cleared.

The investigation into the circumstances of the collision continues.
